Hearts Women shrugged off their disappointment at last wekend's relegation to defeat newly-crowned champions Celtic Reserves in their final match of the season.

The visitors arrived in Dalkeith boasting an unbeaten record in the league this term but they were soon on the back foot after an impressive opening from the Maroon.

Borthwick twice came close in the first 10 minutes, while Porteous had to be at her best to keep the Glasgow side out in an entertaining opening half.

Hearts broke the deadlock from the penalty spot midway through the half after Borthwick was brought down inside the box. She dusted herself down and dispatched a low shot to the keeper's right to send the crowd wild with delight.

Celtic were stunned by the reverse and with only five minutes of the half remaining they fell further behind following a corner kick on the right. Piaskowski hit a low delivery to the edge of the penalty box for Borthwick to fire a low shot goalwards where Honjigawa, four yards out, cheekily flicked the ball between her legs and into the net to send the Maroons into a 2-0 lead.

The second half had barely started when Hearts showed they were not going to sit in and defend their lead as they drove forward at every opportunity looking to add to their score.

Although the Glasgow side enjoyed more possession of, Hearts were still a danger with their quick counter-attacks and from both wings excellent crosses were delivered into the box that troubled the visitors.

With the clock running down and the home side defending well they could now sense a famous victory was on the cards and even a last minute goal from the visitors was not going to deprive them of that win.

Head Coach Tam Milne said: "We were magnificent today and I was so proud of the girls, they worked so hard all over the park. We looked dangerous every time we went forward and with Amanda (Porteous) looking unbeatable in goal and our defenders looking solid and reliable, I think we deserved our win. Celtic will be disappointed to lose their unbeaten league record but they are worthy champions."

Hearts Women: Porteous, Campbell, Gill, Rogers, Hurst, Anderson, Paterson, Borthwick, Buchanan (Fraser), Piaskowski, Honjigawa. Subs. McGovern, Ward.
