Jim Jefferies tonight declared himself delighted with Hearts win over Gillingham here in Kent.

The Tynecastle side came from behind after Luke Rooney's penalty to seal victory with goals from Arvydas Novikovas and Ismael Bouzid.

Speaking after the game the manager said: "I did not go overboard when we lost on Tuesday [at Dunfermline] and I am not going overboard because we won tonight.

"It was a tasty first half. We took a while to get into it but overran them in the second half.

"It was a great exercise. At the end of the day it is how they are looking and it was a massive step up from the other night. We're obviously happy we won the game.

"We can take a lot out of the night especially how we lifted the tempo after we lost the opening goal and hopefully we can do the same on Saturday.

"Fair dues to them particularly given it was a long day of travelling."

The manager had praise for Arvydas after his excellent equaliser, whilst he was also pleased with the contributions of Ryan Stevenson and Ryan McGowan.

"When you see Arvydas in full flow he is exciting to watch as is Templeton. He's not short of skill on the other side as well.

"For me Ryan Stevenson was magnificent up front. We were short of strikers and we are trying to save Calum for Saturday.

"I wanted to see Ryan McGowan in a different position and he looks to me like he could be more of a central midfielder than defender."

On the issue of Adrian Mrowiec, who was on trial again, the manager believes the Pole has something in his locker, although he'll need to improve.

"He is a big strong boy and if he can get tighter on people - I think it is the nature of how he plays he tends to sit off," he said.

"He was better in the second half getting up and winning the ball.

"We are trying to see if he is a chance. I can't guarantee anyone a regular game but if he wants to stay and compete for a place then he might do us a turn. There are tougher games ahead."
