Donald Ford scored one of his best goals for Hearts with the winner against Rangers at Ibrox in 1972 - but he reckons few people remember it because Tommy Murray sat on the ball in the build-up!

With the league clash drifting towards a 0-0 draw, Hearts had won posession when Murray's iconic moment took place.

And it's that inpudence which has sparked the story behind Hearts dramatic new home kit.

"It was a well known incident but it really arose from a game the previous year when we were being hammered by Rangers at Ibrox," recalled strike legend Donald.

"It was late in the game when Willie Johnston took the ball down to the corner flag and sat on the ball. The Rangers supporters thought this was fantastic, of course.

"But when we went back the following year, it was an awful game with the score 0-0. There were only a few minutes to go when we worked a move through the middle of the field and the ball was played to wee Tommy.

"He was about 15 yards into the Rangers half and there was nothing happening as everyone had basically given the game up. Tommy just put his foot on the ball and sat on it! The Rangers fans this time went absolutely bananas!

"Sandy Jardine was playing sweeper for Rangers and came rushing towards Tommy. He leapt up, played the ball to Jimmy Brown who had made an overlap down the left and he crossed it into the box.

"Balls coming in from the left meant I was heading with my weaker side but I got up well to head home into the corner past Peter McCloy. 1-0, game over!

"I have to say it was the best goal I ever scored from a left-sided cross but nobody remembers it - they only remember wee Tommy sitting on the ball. It was brilliant and if I remember, he made a bee-line for the ash track in front of the stand at Ibrox and waved two fingers to the Rangers fans all the way from the corner flag to the half-way line."

Such cheekiness was soon deemed punishable by the authorities, however, as Donald remembered.

"Not long after that, it was deemed a bookable offence for ungentlemanly conduct," he said.

"It wasn't done when Johnston did it as he was a Rangers player but as soon as someone else did it to them, it became a bookable offence."
